TEXTILE2020 goes Brazil

The second mission of the TEXTILE2020 project took place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from April 15 to 18, 2013. Representatives from the AEI Textils, FOMENTEX, INNtex and UP-tex clusters participated in this mission on the occasion of the TECNOTEXTIL fair.

The TECNOTEXTIL fair is a major event for the Brazilian textiles industry. The first edition of TECNOTEXTIL took place in 2009 and brought together 14 000 visitors. The second edition in 2011 counted 17 000 visitors that were interested in getting further information about the products and services of the 110 exhibitors from 15 countries. The 2013 edition of TECNOTEXTIL had 18 600 visitors. Most of them are stakeholders from the textile sector, i.e. students, professors, researchers, companies, retailers, investors, clients etc.

During four days, the TEXTILE2020 cluster representatives had numerous meetings with high level representatives from the Brazilian textiles industry, government agencies, unversities and relevant business support organisations, including the Association of the Brazilian Textiles Industry (ABIT), the Association of the Brazilian Textiles Technicians (ABTT), the Industrial Federation of the State of Sao Paulo (FIESP), the Brazilian Innovation Agency (FINEP), the Brazilian Agency for the Development of the Industry (ABDI), Center for Technical Textiles (IPT-CETIM), etc.

The discussions at the meetings made evident that Brazil, with its nearly 200 million inhabitants, has some quite interesting opportunities to offer for the European technical textiles companies. But, there are also some specific particularities that have to be taken into consideration. Due to relatively high import taxes, it is quite important that European companies create subsidiaries in Brazil. Starting a joint venture with a Brazilian company is another solution to avoid the high import taxes.

Creating a subsidiary or starting a joint venture is not easy for SMEs. In this context, the TEXTILE2020 clusters can play an important role. They can help to identify business opportunities in Brazil, find interested partners, organize matchmaking events, find the appropriate funding and provide all kind of related support.

Therefore, it has been decided that a second meeting will be organized in Brazil at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2014. The objective of the next meeting is to bring together interested SMEs from Europe and Brazil in order to enable strategic projects between them.
